Howe Island Waste and Recycling
Please Note:
Recycling: The recycling depot will not operate on Tuesday evening December 26, 2023. The next regular day will be December 30, 2023.
Garbage Collection: The adjusted garbage collection dates will be December 27, 2023, and January 2, 2024.
WASTE
We encourage a two-bag limit. You will be provided with 104 tags picked up at the Municipal Office at 50 Baseline Rd, Howe Island. If you use your allotment of tags, you will be required to purchase additional tags. A tag must be affixed to each bag. Bags are not to exceed 30 pounds.
Garbage is picked up every Monday morning and must be put out by 7am. Statutory Holiday Monday pick ups will occur the next day (Tuesday)
RECYCLING
Recycling center for Howe Island Residents is located at 50 Baseline Road, and is open:
- Saturdays from 8:00 am to Noon
- Tuesdays from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
- Thursdays from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm ( Starting after the Victoria Day Weekend and up to the Labor Day Weekend Only)
Recycling is available for the following types of items:
- Plastics (Grades #1–7 Only), Plastic Bags, Aluminum and Steel Cans
- Aluminum and steel food and beverage cans
- Aluminum trays and foil
- Plastic bags such as grocery bags, frozen fruit/vegetable bags, milk bags/pouches
- Paper Products
- Newspapers
- Telephone books
- White paper
- Catalogues
- Coloured paper
- Paperback books
- Magazines
- Coloured flyers
- Books with hard covers removed
- Boxboard – No Wax Finish, No Gift Wrap
- Flatten all boxes
- Cereal and cracker boxes
- Paper towel tubes
- Toilet paper tubes
- Frozen food boxes
- Drink trays
- Juice boxes
- Greeting cards
- Paper Products
- Household Glass – Food and Beverage Grade Only
- Rinse glass jars before recycling
- Remove jar lids to recycle lids with metal or plastic products

- No mirrors or window panes – these can be left at Donevan’s Hardware Store in Gan (call 613.382.2197 before delivering)

Scrap metal and white goods (appliances containing Freon will not be accepted) can be placed in the Kimco bin.
Disposal of Household Hazardous Waste
Site located at 70 Lappan’s Lane, in the City of Kingston. The fee to use this disposal site is $43.45 per vehicle to be paid by the owner of the hazardous material. The Township will not be responsible for payment for any hazardous waste delivered to the site other than those which are the property of the municipality and are delivered by Township staff. Site hours: Beginning of April to end of November – Thursdays 8:00 am. to 5:00 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Hazardous waste accepted at the site:
- paint, stains
- motor oil, grease
- car batteries
- household batteries
- propane cylinders
- acid/caustics (detergents, drain cleaner)
- pesticides/herbicides (fertilizer)
- medications
- sharps/needles
- solvents (gas, varsol)
